GIIS KL Students Illuminate DBKL Diwali Celebrations at MATIC

The spirit of unity and tradition shone brightly as GIIS KL students captivated audiences at the Diwali Celebrations held by DBKL (Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur) at the Malaysian Tourism Centre (MATIC) at Jalan Ampang.

The event was graced by high-profile dignitaries, including YB Datuk Seri Dr. Zaliha binti Mustafa, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories), and YBhg. Dato’ Seri TPr (Dr.) Maimunah binti Mohd Sharif, Mayor of Kuala Lumpur. They were joined by representatives from foreign embassies, Members of the Kuala Lumpur City Advisory Board, Members of Parliament for the Federal Territories, and Heads of DBKL Departments.

Our students delivered lively and vibrant traditional performances that paid a heartfelt tribute to the Festival of Lights. The dynamic showcase featured the energetic Bhangra, the graceful Peacock Dance, traditional Budaya dances, and the ancient martial art of Silambam. These performances underscored the critical importance of cultural preservation and intercultural exchange.

The celebration offered a full sensory experience of Malaysia's rich multicultural heritage. Attendees enjoyed a variety of traditional cuisines and immersed themselves in cultural activities at various booths. Popular attractions included intricate henna artistry, beautiful rangoli creation, and browsing vibrant lac bangles.

The Mayor of Kuala Lumpur, Dato' Seri TPr. Dr. Maimunah Mohd Sharif, played a key role in hosting the celebration, thereby further highlighting DBKL's commitment to promoting inclusivity and celebrating the major festivals of all of Malaysia's diverse ethnic groups.

GIIS KL is proud to have contributed to this landmark celebration of light, community, and tradition. Furthermore, this event perfectly aligned with the GIIS KL's 9 GEMs framework, notably Gem 7: Universal Values and Ethics, and the Sustainable Development Goals, specifically SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, by fostering mutual respect and community engagement.
